Battle above the Clouds
The amazing heroism is the eternal measure and fate of defenders of Serbia. The Battle of Drina is one of the bloodiest and most incredible ones in World War I. In difficult circumstances, lacking ammunition and equipment, Serbian warriors held off 215.000 Austro-Hungarians for two months, without rest or shifts. In five days of the almost mythical drama on Mačkov Kamen, more than 8.000 Serbs and about 30.000 Austro-Hungarians were killed. And each chapter of the Battle of Gučevo, from the distance between the battle lines to the way of providing supplies and communication, has forever become part of anthologies of warfare

As of this fall, we are being reminded of this by two new monuments in the center of the capital of Serbia: the Monument of Gratitude to Russian and Serbian soldiers in the Belgrade Fortress, and the Monument to Emperor Nikolai II Romanov in the Main Street

Dragons in Zvižd stopped whistling a long time ago. The legend says that St. George caught them in Stig and put a stop to the legend with his spear. But the waters here still carry sparkling secrets, the underground empire of caves still amazes, Rusallias still fall into trance and bring news from other worlds. Bušin, shepherds’ wind instrument made of linden bark, only rarely plays. Kanitz, Header and Hofmann all wrote about this area, but they never fathomed the kolo dance on stilts and the smile of the girls from Zvižd. Perhaps poets know it, as Raičković did, the poet born in Neresnica near Kučevo

The great writer loved Banja so much that he lived there for five years, 1961–1966, until the Brioni Plenum. He lived in villa ”Dalibor”, next to the Lipovačka River. In Banja he completed his novel ”Far Away Is the Sun”, the third book of ”Divisions”, wrote ”The Fairytale”. He named his famous imaginary village after the name of one villa in Banja, ”Prerovo”.
